Basement Insulation Across the GTA
Overview
About Basement Insulation
Basements lose heat through foundation walls and the rim joist area where the floor framing sits on the foundation. Insulating these areas makes a finished basement more comfortable and is usually done as part of a renovation, once walls are framed and before the drywall goes up.
KHG Insulation Services provides basement insulation in the GTA for homeowners and renovation contractors. We insulate framed foundation walls, fit rim joist cavities and work with the vapour-control approach the project requires, so the wall assembly is ready for the next stage of the renovation.
Moisture comes first. Insulation is not waterproofing, and it should not go over walls that leak, seep or stay damp. If water is getting in, the source needs to be corrected before the basement is framed and insulated. We flag visible concerns during our review.

What the Service Involves
- Checking for moisture
- We look for signs of water entry, efflorescence and damp areas on the foundation before insulation is scheduled.
- Reviewing the framing
- We confirm the wall framing, stud spacing and any gap or moisture break between the framing and the foundation.
- Insulating foundation walls
- Batts are fitted into the framed walls, cut and split around wiring, boxes and pipes, filling each cavity without compression.
- Rim joist cavities
- Each rim joist bay is insulated and fitted closely, since this area is a common source of drafts and cold floors.
- Vapour control
- Insulation is coordinated with the vapour-control layer specified for the project so the assembly is complete before drywall.
Applications

Materials
Insulation Materials Used
Fiberglass batts
Common for framed basement walls, sized to the stud depth and fitted between studs.
Mineral-wool batts
Dense, moisture-tolerant batts that hold their shape and are often used for rim joists and basement walls.
Benefits
Why Basement Insulation Matters
Warmer finished space
Insulated foundation walls reduce the cold surfaces that make basements uncomfortable in winter.
Fewer drafts at the rim joist
Fitting the rim joist bays reduces cold air at the top of the foundation and cold floors above.
Ready for drywall
Insulation and vapour control are complete so the renovation can move to the next stage.
Reduced heat loss
Insulating below grade reduces heat lost through the foundation, which is a large area in most homes.
